Twenty people, one room, a stack of tripods and a lot of phones. This content creation workshop was built to help a not-for-profit partner in the arts and culture sector plan, shoot and share their own video content, so the work they do keeps getting captured by the people closest to it.
What we did
We ran the session in person over one afternoon. Mitch, our Digital Strategist, led the workshop with Jasmine and Rodney supporting, because with 20 people in the room we wanted everyone to feel looked after while they worked through the practical side of creating content.
The goal was simple: lift the team’s in-house capability so they can plan and film content themselves. No film school and no fancy or overcomplicated equipment.
What we covered
Rather than hand over a manual, we followed the journey of a video from first idea to finished footage. We started with getting clear on what’s worth filming and who it’s for, moved on to getting comfortable in front of and behind the camera, and finished by putting it all into practice on the phones already in everyone’s pockets.
Everything was pitched for beginners, so nobody needed any experience to jump in, and the focus stayed on building confidence as much as skills.
Hands-on from the start
We kept the talking short and the doing long. Between short bursts of guidance, the team worked through practical activities in pairs and small groups, with tripods, microphones and our own phones on hand so people could test things as they went.
The examples all came from the team’s own world, the collections, programs and behind-the-scenes moments they already have. The stories were already there. This was about showing the team how to capture them.
What came out of the room
Our favourite part of the day was hearing how differently everyone thinks about content. The ideas that came out of the room were fresh and creative, and plenty of them were things we’d never have thought of ourselves.
The team left with a stack of ideas to build from, a clearer plan for what to film, and the confidence to pick up a phone and start filming. Their homework was to film a set of clips of their own before the next session.
What comes next?
This content creation workshop is the first of two sessions. In the second, the team brings the footage they’ve shot and we edit and publish it together, turning the ideas from the room into finished content.
